ART BASEL MIAMI – STEVE POWERS (ESPO) & BARRY MCGEE

Two modern icons of graffiti who helped pioneer the transition of street-art to gallery walls, had a strong presence during Art Basel Miami this year. Steve Power’s (ESPO) Deitch sponsored Signorama was perhaps the most ambitious and impressive public installation seen in Miami this year, and consisted of both old and new works, including a site-specific lounge and operational sign making shop.

Barry McGee’s almost unavoidable presence stands a testament to the artist’s growing popularity and recognition amongst the art establishment of his significance in the modern art world. Numerous McGee installations could be seen at five well known galleries, and across four major art fairs, including a strong showing at Art Basel, with works on view at both Deitch Projects and Roberts and Tilton. Perhaps the most notable, was Mcgee’s inclusion in the prominent Margulies Collection, one of the worlds most extensive private collections of contemporary sculpture, photography, video and installation works. Here, visitors could see McGee alongside some of the most accomplished artists of the last fifity years, including Sol LeWitt, George Segal, Richard Serra, Dan Flavin, Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. Thanks to Jeff from At Arms.
