Interview with Eklips / 7th Letter spotlight

Eklips is known to run some things on the american West coast.

The Seventh Letter’s roots go back nearly 20 years, when the collective’s founder and leader, Eklips, a legendary writer in his own right, started the AWR (Art Work Rebels/Angels Will Rise) and MSK (Mad Society Kings) writing crews while bombing around the Motor Yard in Los Angeles. As Eklips’ fame grew, so did that of those wanting to align with his artists. Sensing an opportunity to take graffiti in a new direction, Eklips merged AWR and MSK under the Seventh Letter umbrella in 1999. By then, AWR/MSK members were well known on the street, and Eklips’ idea was to take graf where it hadn’t gone before, but where lowbrow-art practitioners like Ed “Big Daddy” Roth had previously spun gold: namely, corporate gigs and merchandising. (-LEOPOLD, Shelley. The Rise Of The Seventh Letter, LA Weekly, July 2007.)

Eklips answered some of our questions. Here it goes:

Galerie d’art Yves Laroche: What’s your name & what are you doing later today?

EKLIPS: EKLIPS ONE AWR . MSK . THE SEVENTH LETTER . KNOWN GALLERY . TSL FILMS . TSL ARMOR . ETC… I’M AT A LOCAL COFFEE SHOP WORKING ON AN ART SHOW WE’RE DOING AT MAGIC AS WELL AS 20 OTHER THINGS. I HAVE A.D.D. REAL BAD SO I’M ALWAYS WORKING ON AT LEAST 20 THINGS AT ONCE.

YL: Do you still write on things? What’s the last thing you painted?

E: I LOVE TO WRITE ON THINGS! THAT’S ALL I REALLY ENJOY THESE DAYS. I DON’T PAINT PIECES MUCH ANYMORE, NO TIME, AND THESE DUDES TODAY ARE SO SICK I FEEL IT’S THEIR TIME TO SHINE. LAST TIME I PAINTED… IN KOREA LAST MONTH.. JUST A LITTLE SOMETHING, SOMETHING.
YL: Our gallery’s been promoting Norm’s (YL) work for about a year now. What can you tell us about him?

E: HE DOES AMAZING TATTOOS, HE BOMBS LIKE A MAD MAN, HE’S JEWISH, HE DOESN’T EAT MEAT AND HE’S A SOLID DUDE…

YL: Is there a difference between AWR, MSK and The Seventh Letter?

E: YES, AWR AND MSK IS A  GRAFFITI FAMILY, TSL IS A BUSINESS WE USE TO GROW IN THE CORPORATE WORLD.

YL: If you had to choose between Photoshop and Illustrator, what would it be?

E: ILLUSTRATOR 8.0

YL: Many friends of mine dream of being flown around to paint letters for gigs on every continent… Is it really all that?

YES! 100%. THE BEST THING IN THE WORLD IS TO FLY AROUND THE WORLD WITH YOUR CREW AND FAMILY! BEING ON A PLANE AND LOOKING AROUND AND ALL YOU SEE IS YOUR WIFEY, YOUR DAUGHTER AND ALL YOUR BROTHERS CHILLEN, PARTYING, SKETCHING, POLITICING, ALL THAT. WHAT COULD BE BETTER? PEOPLE TREAT US LIKE ROYALTY WHEN WE TRAVEL. IT’S @#$%ING AMAZING! AND WE GET PAID TO DO IT!!!!!!

YL: What’s good about writing on other people’s shit?

E: FREE RANGE.

YL: Where do you want to be at 60?

E: DOING THE SAME STUFF, JUST BIGGER AND BETTER. I’M PRETTY HAPPY WITH THE WAY MY LIFE IS GOING.

YL: Montreal is by far the best place to live. Do you agree?

E: WHY WOULD I AGREE WITH THAT?

YL: What has more impact… 50 fillins on downtown street corners or 5 illegal wildstyles on high traffic freeway spots ?

E: DEPENDS ON WHO DID THEM. CAN’T REALLY COMPARE 50 RIME FILLINS TO 5 REVOK BURNERS… THEY BOTH WOULD BLOW ANYONES MIND! HOW ABOUT BOTH, WE’RE NOT ABOUT SETTLING.

YL: Any shoutouts, beef, promo?

E: KNOWNGALLERY.COM – CLICK CLACK… FOREVER PURE, AYER, SKATE AND ALL THE ANGELS WHO’VE RISEN…. MAD SOCIETY UNTIL I DIE…
